Happy St. Lucia Day!

December 13 is the feast day of St. Lucia, and since we have a little Lucia in this house we thought it would be fun to celebrate. Last year when Lucy was just two months old we went to the Swedish Embassy for their celebration. The whole experience was really neat, but it was also quite a mess - literally. While Lucy was dressed in all white there was a bit of a bathroom situation and daddy brought Lucy out wrapped up in paper towel.

This year we wen't invited back-despite having an intimate lunch at the Ambassador's residence the week of-so we celebrated at home. We dressed Lucy in all white, with a red sash, and a crown made of holly (which didn't stay on long.) Andrew made the St. Lucia buns and mulled wine (the Swedes call is Glugg) and we listened to the song that is sung. Check out the Rick Steves' video, but you may be familiar with the American Girl Kristen who had a book and costume about St. Lucia Day.

The feast of St. Lucia is all about a girl who brings light into darkness. It is about light and warmth in a time of year and in a place where there isn't much of it. Sometimes, it feels like our little Lucia is bringing a little light to us all (even if she won't keep the holly crown on!). Happy Christmas!
