Fort Washington

Just when we think we have seen most of the sights in the greater Washington area we are proven wrong! When the Hollands were in town, we drove across the Potomac river over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and down Indian Head highway to Fort Washington.

The fort was built after the war of 1812 when the invading British burned an already built fort at this very spot on their way to burn Washington. Fort Washington was built to protect Washington DC from a similar invading force. It was part of a string of forts all the way along the East Coast, stretching from Maine to Florida. It never saw battle, but was heavily garrisoned during the Civil War. It was used as a fort all the way through World War II.

Now, its an empty, but very impressive, building. It was great to go over there on a warm spring day to crawl over all the overgrown walls and rambling hills. A good outing - great to know there's still new things to see!
Getting a lay of the land, with great views of the Potomac off to the right
