A Mid-West Weekend in Old Town

This weekend, we had friends from Wisconsin in town. Well, they are from WI, but have spent the last 5 years in Chicago, and just recently moved to Munster, IN - just outside of Chicago. I love having friends from home visit. There is nothing better than catching up with an old friend who knows your every habit, and getting to know their husband even better. Love it!

We spent the morning on Saturday at Mt.Vernon. When we walked up to buy the ticket, it was $15 for a day pass or $25 for an annual pass. We live in Old Town, so will definitely be coming back here in the next year - sign me up! I've been to Mt. Vernon at least a handful of times, but saw some things I have never seen before: including the 16 sided threshing barn. My favorite is the newish museum and education center where they recreate through forensic anthropology wax models of Washington. I think we look alike. Maybe there was some German or Irish in him? ha.

After a scheduled nap-time and some enforced olympics-watching, we made the trek to dinner on King Street. We started at Grape & Bean on S. Royal with some nice charcuterie and noticed it it had started pouring outside, so we settled in with a little more wine. As our friends were in town from the midwest, they were excited to have some fresh fish for dinner. Unfortunately, the Fish Market was too long a line, so we went down the street to The Wharf. The mojitos and crab cakes were flowing. Afterwards we had cupcakes from Lavender Moon. Their chocolate cupcakes are to die for.

The next day we did some great shopping time along King St. It's great having Ann Taylor, Banana and Anthropology within walking distance. Also, there are a lot of nice boutiques like 3 Sisters and the interior design store Decorium that we checked out.

Overall, a fabulous weekend. While our siblings went to the Washington County Fair back home, we had some flavor of Wisconsin here in VA: the ice cream from Pops is a close second to Kopp's Custard in WI.
