GW Presidential Library

On Tuesday, Lucy and I went on a tour of the George Washington Presidential Library. It opened in September and when my parents came into town when Lucy arrived I sent them there to check it out. They were turned away and told the library is for private study only. I thought that was odd considering other presidential libraries are open to the public. (This past January we toured the LBJ library in Austin, TX, and it was amazing.) However, a few weeks ago I received an email from Mount Vernon as they are now offering public tours every other Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. What an inconvenient time - but works for us - gotta love maternity leave!

The library features three main collections: GW's books (and if they don't have his actual book they have a replica of it), GW and Martha's papers and letters, and books from the period. The building also has a few conference rooms and on the premise is a building where people who do extended periods of study can stay. I'm really glad we got to see the library. It was not as glamours as the LBJ library, but very fitting for our first president. Lucy and I were definitely the youngest people there, and our tour guide, John, was awesome.
